NOTE ABOUT DIARY ENTRY:
You were asked to write a diary entry based on an event you've read so far in The Guns of Easter.
I couldn't believe my eyes. I was used to seeing real British soldiers marching down the street, but not Irish ones like this, They didn't really have any real uniforms so they didn't look like a genuine army but they were marching like one. I actually think I recognised some of them from Uncle Mick's Citizen Army.
Next thing, one of them shouted "To the GPO" and before I knew what was happening they were running into the General Post Office and taking it over. It was all very strange!!! I was feeling a little bit scared but I wanted to keep looking- what was going on? Was it the start of some sort of a rebellion or something like that? I don't even know why they would do something like that...
You were asked to write a diary entry based on an event you've read so far in The Guns of Easter.
- Pretend that you are Jimmy when writing about it. For example, we could use the part where he witnessed the GPO being taken over. Imagine, if you were Jimmy, what you might write in your diary that evening after that event.
I couldn't believe my eyes. I was used to seeing real British soldiers marching down the street, but not Irish ones like this, They didn't really have any real uniforms so they didn't look like a genuine army but they were marching like one. I don't even know why they would do something like that...
- Use the checklist I.posted already If you check the example with the checklist you can see that it follows the guidelines:
- I used the past tense, I've written from my point of view (as Jimmy)
- I gave my own opinion
- I included facts
- I tried to use descriptive words
- I used an informal style
- I've used time conjunctions (next, later)
- I've broken it up into paragraphs and I've used inverted commas to show speech.

It can get a little bit lonely at home or sometimes quite the opposite it can be just too busy with brothers or sisters etc. I strongly recommend some mindful meditation. You can do it on your own or with someone at home. Either way it is worth it. You will feel very calm and relaxed after it.

TERM 3!!!!!!!
Hi girls, I hope you all had a fabulous chocolate filled Easter. I am still working my way through a few eggs, though I have a very willing helper in Daithí.
All your parents have been emailed (Monday 8am) with my new special remote learning email. [email protected]
This is the email we will be communicating through. It is important you use a parents email to reply.
Before I ask to see any of the work from the last three weeks, I really just want to know how you are.
Your first email task is to give me a FULL update on how you have been. Have you learned any new skills? How are you getting on with your siblings? Have you tried any challenges? Tell me everything. I miss all your stories.
My update:
I am beating my husband in the wheelie bin football challenge, which I am very happy about. I just finished Guns of Easter. What a great book. I am going to start a new book tomorrow. Daithí has moved on from reading "How the Elephant got his Trunk," 17 times a day to Tatty McTat. I must say, I am relieved not to have to read the elephant book, I think I know it off by heart.
We go on a walk everyday and search for fairy doors, Daithí likes to knock on them.
I have been for a few cycles too, down by the river and around the estate. It is really nice to get out in the fresh air.
I have experimented in the kitchen a little and have baked a few things. Some were delicious and others not so much!
I miss seeing all my friends, my brothers, my niece and nephews and especially my Mam, Dad and Freckles.I really miss you girls too, I miss having the chats. Imagine, I can't wait to listen to you all chatting in class! I never thought I would say that.
That's my update for you.
Get going on your emails and I will get back to each of you as quick as possible. I can't wait to hear from you.

Just in case.......
So just in case you are bored over the Easter holidays I have added some nice activities below. They are all completely optional. I have uploaded a gallery of art ideas and simple drawings that might be fun. I am sure you have lots of dances and lip syncs sorted so I won't even attempt to give ideas in that area. I have seen one lip sync and it was excellent, very entertaining.
Maths Fun:
https://www.mathsweek.ie/2019/ - The "Maths Week" website has a huge selection of puzzles and problem-solving activities to challenge you!!
There are also some additional maths worksheets below (if you haven't done them already) :)
Gaeilge fun:
www.duolingo.com - useful for Irish practice. You can start with a placement test or just start at Basics1 (should fly through this) and work your way through the different levels. This can be accessed through the app or on the website and is handy for some revision of your Gaeilge foclóir.
Football BIn challenge:
I have been trying this over the last few days. I won't lie, I thought it was going to be really easy. I was very WRONG!
Stand about 10 feet away from your wheelie bin and simply try kick the ball in. That is it! I must sadly report I have got it in 3 times out of 60. Try not to rely on the lid of the bin as a backboard. Here is a link of Dublin footballer Diarmuid Connolly completing the challenge. https://youtu.be/jJyqpHmZcFI

Easter HOLIDAYYYYYYYSSSSS!
Good morning girls. Happy Friday! I really can't believe I haven't seen you in three weeks. I am missing all of you loads. I have been thinking of all the nice things we would have been doing together, the Easter Raffle, tennis with David, Art and loads more. Hopefully we will all be back together soon.
I am still reading The Guns of Easter, my fence is painted, Daithi is drawing loads andI have had so many Zoom calls with Ms McCartan and Ms Brodigan.
I will post the answers for all of this weeks work tomorrow and also put up some nice activities for Easter. Please take it easy over the holidays, you have worked hard over the last three weeks. Don't forget to help out at home and do some of the jobs. I have heard of some families doing "Come Dine with Me." It could be fun!
Keep your social distance, wash those hands and together, lets flatten the curve.
Chat soon.

Another week, new rules!
Good morning girls and parents. I really hope everybody is still well. Our Taoiseach has made some new rules for us to abide by. I am sure you are adapting well and staying at home as much as possible. Don't forget to keep washing your hands, just because you are at home, don't let your excellent hygiene skills slide. I hope you are still helping out at home. I spotted one of our girls washing her Dads van today. Well done! I am sure he was delighted.
I am still missing you lots and was very sad to hear we wouldn't be back in school until at least after Easter. But I hope to be in contact with each of you soon. This week I continued to paint my fence, tried Joe Wicks live P.E lesson and played plenty of games with Daithí. I had lots of calls with the other teachers, all trying to figure out how we can help you guys at home.
Thank you for your responses on our survey, though I did notice some, got a little over excited and responded a couple of times!
The majority are happy with the work load so far. I am glad to hear this. We try to pick work you are well able to do and obviously add in some nice bits here and there. For those eager beavers, we have included some extra Maths sheets below. I will post answers for these too. This extra work is completely optional.
Again, take care of yourselves, stay safe and stay well. One more week of work before the Easter holidays come and only 2 more weeks until Easter Eggs.
Chat soon,
Ms Kirwan

1916 and Independence: Part 1 Notes
- On Easter Monday 1916 about 1000 men from The Irish Volunteers and The Irish Citizen Army marched through Dublin and took control of some important buildings.
- Their headquarters were in the GPO.
- Pádraig Pearse read a Proclamation declaring Ireland a Republic.
- The British moved in on Tuesday morning.
- By Saturday morning the city was in ruins and the rebels decided to surrender.
- Nurse Elizabeth O’Farrell carried a white flag to the British.
- About 450 people had been killed and 2,500 injured.
- The people of Dublin were annoyed at the rebels because their city was now in ruins.
- 15 of the rebel leaders were later shot dead in Kilmainham Jail. This changed the attitude of many Dubliners who came to realise that they were actually heroes who died for their country.
- Éamonn De Valera was not shot because he had been born in America. He was sentenced to life imprisonment but was released a year later.
- In 1905 Aurthur Griffith had founded Sinn Féin, he wanted Ireland to be completely separate from Britain. In 1918 there was a general election and Sinn Féin won 73 of 105 seats. However attitudes had changed since 1916 and nationalists now wanted full independence and not Home Rule.
- The elected members set up their own parliament in Dublin in 1919. They called it Dáil Éireann and made Éamonn De Valera its first leader. They declared Ireland a republic.
- Michael Collins took charge of the Irish Volunteers. They became known as the Irish Republican Army (IRA).
